TARA
Automatic assessment of Oral Reading Fluency (ORF)
Vision
To build a literacy and oral language evaluation tool that becomes a de facto standard for multiple languages across the globe.
Problem
Poor school-level literacy outcomes in India reduce future workforce capabilities. Reliable impact-monitoring tools for the government's literacy mission can greatly assist remediation programs.
Solution
An objective, scalable voice-AI tool for oral reading fluency assessment using standard rubrics, enabling personalised, data-driven instruction that maximises resource use.
Potential
Currently deployed to 700,000 students (grades 3–8) across India. The Ministry of Education is keen to add more languages and scale to all schools, impacting nearly 20 crore students.
Target Beneficiaries
Direct beneficiaries: schools, students, and parents. Stakeholders include governments, school leaders, and NGOs and UN bodies committed to the SDG on quality education.
Current Users
Deployed across 1,200+ Kendriya Vidyalaya schools, testing English and Hindi ORF thrice yearly; benchmarks created and results shared on live dashboards over two academic years (2024–2026).
